HOT SPRINGS –– Paul Bruce Swenson, 79, of Hot Springs, passed away on January 18, 2025. Paul was born on Jan. 4, 1946, in Pierre and was adopted by Clinton and Pansy Swenson in September of that same year. Paul learned to work with livestock and farm equipment on the Swenson farm/ranch. He was active in FFA and 4-H, later becoming a livestock judge at various County Achievement Days. Paul loved the outdoors, wildlife, and farming.
Paul attended country school, then middle school/high school in Onida, graduating in 1965. He attended Southern State College, graduating in 1969 with a Bachelor’s Degree in music. He taught music for 20 years. Paul also obtained a Master’s Degree from BHSU in school administration and went on to be a principal for 13 years.
Paul enjoyed hunting and fishing. He also earned a pilot’s license in 1977. He played guitar in several bands during his lifetime., starting in the early ‘60’s. Paul continued to play old rock n’ roll, country, and gospel music on his guitars the rest of his life.
Paul is survived by his wife Sandy of Hot Springs, sons Mark (Denise) Swenson of Pierre, Scott (Brandy) Swenson of Pierre, daughter Arnette Swenson of Pierre, brother Mark (Valerie) Swenson of rural Pierre, step-daughter Michelle Meland of Rapid City, two grandsons and three step-grandsons, one step-granddaughter, four great-grandchildren, several cousins, and many special musician friends from various parts of South Dakota.
Paul was preceded in death by his parents, Clinton and Pansy Swenson of rural Pierre, and his first wife, Kay Swenson.
Paul chose not to have a funeral, but a private family service will be held in Onida next spring.
Arrangements have been placed in the care of Chamberlain McColley’s Funeral Home in Hot Springs.
