Memorial golf tournament held for Alpena man

ALPENA — For the 12th straight years, family and friends of the late Brett Boomer of Alpena gathered for a weekend of enjoyment and remembrance.

This year’s event was moved to the Broadland Creek Golf Course earlier this spring, after outgrowing the Wessington Springs Country Club, which had been its home since it was conceived by Boomer’s brother, Todd.

“When we were kids, Brett and I spent most of our summers at our grandparents in Wessington Springs, and learned to golf there, so that had been our sentimental reason for holding our event there,” said Brett’s brother Todd.

This year’s event boasted nearly 60 golfers for the tournament.

The day began with a breakfast get together at the Red Hog Pub in Alpena.

“While the day began with rain, the sun broke through and it turned out to be a wonderul day,” Todd Boomer said.

This year’s winners were the team of Logan Korkow, Alex Scheel, Jared and Amanda Smith, with a score of 65.

The winning team will have their names added to the plaque that hangs in the Red Hog.

Thanks to the participants and a list of sponsors, the tournament was able to raise $3,000 that is donated to the Alpena Fire Department, for the purchase of fire-fighting and rescue equipment for the fire department.

“The AFD were the first ones to respond when Brett went down on the basketball court at the Alpena Community Center gym,” Boomer said. “Unfortunately, he later passed away at Huron Regional Medical Center.”

The day ended back in Alpena, where participants drew for door prizes and plans were made for next year’s tournament, which is set for June 14.

“A special thanks to Ben Dragt and his staff at the Broadland Creek Golf Course in Huron for their help coordinating the event,” Boomer added.
