Noem inducted into DAR

HURON – South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem spoke to a crowd at Younger Hall on the South Dakota State Fairgrounds Thursday to encourage fairgoers to view the South Dakota Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) display of “The American Revolution Experience,” a traveling exhibit that highlights many lesser-known individuals participating in the American Revolution.

As the country looks forward to the 250th anniversary of the birth of the nation, Noem stated her excitement that South Dakota school children are going to be well-versed in the history of their country in ways that they weren’t when she came into office. She noted legislative efforts that died due to lack of support to establish learning about the formation of the country before a curriculum review and change by the South Dakota Department of Education did much of the same work.

DAR South Dakota State Regent Katherine Tarrell then invited Noem and her sister, Cindy Grantham, to the front.

Tarrell then announced that after research into their genealogy, it was found that the sisters have an ancestor who fought in the Revolutionary War, Ephraim Wilson, which qualifies both as members of DAR. They were presented with certificates confirming their membership.

“The American Revolution Experience” is open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. through Sunday at the fairgrounds and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Monday.
