Commission discusses provisional budget

Posted

HURON — In an extended meeting Tuesday morning, the Beadle County Commission worked through the particulars of the 2025 provisional budget with county department heads.

The final provisional budget will be approved at next week’s commission meeting, with any adjustments to the budget from that point forward requiring a vote of the commission.

The meeting opened with Highway Supervisor Jason Fritzsche. He explained that the department has been working on blading all roads and mowing road ditches. He also stated that the new belly dump trailer is in at Butler and will be delivered next week. A new hire, Brad Jungemann, was approved.

Amy Fullerton of Huron Housing spoke with the commission regarding the support that the county pledges to Huron Housing, specifically to assist with the housing rehabilitation program. She explained that only one out-of-town home is currently in the program. Fullerton stated that to be part of the program, home owners must have home insurance on the home, and that is frequently an issue with dilapidated properties.

The commission discussed future support of the program, but chose to table the decision until next week’s meeting regarding the provisional budget.

A variance request regarding property at Lake Byron owned by Matt and Debbie Busch was approved to allow for building closer to property line than current setbacks would allow.

Busch explained that they plan to build on the foundation that exists on the property, no closer to the property line, but that no active variance was on file for the property, so this was to ensure everything was properly in place with the Equalization Office.

During his time discussing budget with the commission, Sheriff Doug Solem announced the hire of Jason Schultz in the jail and Keith Fitzgerald as a deputy. Those hires were both approved.

A plat was approved on property near Virgil.

The budget will be finalized along with other regular end-of-month items at the next County Commission meeting on Tuesday, July 30, at 9 a.m. in the commission room on the second floor of the courthouse.
