Renner inks sweep against Post 7

HURON — The Huron Post 7 team fought in both games but came up short in the final home doubleheader of the regular season against Renner Post 307 Saturday, falling 7-3 and 9-3 at Memorial Park Stadium.

In the opener, Post 307 jumped out to a 3-0 lead after one inning and added another run in the top of the second. They held that lead entering the bottom of the fourth, when Huron would rally.

Bubba Peterson walked to open the inning, and a sacrifice bunt by Jackson Mattke moved him to second. Logan Leyendecker followed with a single to right field that put runners on the corners.

Leyendecker then stole second, and an error on the throw allowed Peterson to come home. Layne Wenzel walked in the same at bat after coming up just foul on a long drive down the left field line.

Jack Pedersen drove in Leyendecker with a double, putting runners on second and third. Kolton Ogle lifted a sacrifice fly to score Wenzel.

Unfortunately, that was the last big scoring opportunity that Post 7 capitalized on in the game, as they loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning, but a double play erased the chance to punch a run across.

Tommie Martin pitched a complete game for the Huron, allowing seven runs over seven innings on 13 hits and a pair of walks. He struck out three.

Peterson and Tanner Gilbert each had a single and a walk. Pedersen had a double and Leyendecker had a steal as Post 7 fell in the opener, 7-3.

Post 7 kept pace early in the nightcap with Renner, but after knotting the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the fourth, Post 307 added on a trio of runs in each of the next two innings for the 9-3 victory.

Peterson opened the game on the mound, allowing eight runs over 5 1/3 innings on ten hits and four walks, striking out three. Leyendecker closed out the game, pitching the final 1 2/3 innings, allowing a run on two hits and a walk while striking out one.

Leyendecker had a pair of singles and two stolen bases. Peterson had a walk and a single and stole a base. Wenzel added a double.

Post 7 will take a 7-28 record into Regions beginning Thursday.
